A Few Tips on Outdoor Lanterns
For covered Entrances, Verandahs and Outdoor Living Spaces where Lanterns are not directly exposed to the weather, Indoor Lanterns without IP Ratings can often be used with an Electricians approval.
For Lanterns that will be fully exposed to the elements a fitting with an Ingress Protection Rating of 44 or above would be recommended.
IP Ratings combine two numbers to indicate the protection of the fittings electrical parts from environmental conditions. The first number refers to protection from intrusion of foreign objects and the second to moisture protection, the ingress of water. IP 44 for example, means the light is protected against the intrusion of solid foreign bodies 1mm and larger as well as against rain and water jets from any direction. An IP 23 rating would be sufficient if the Lantern would only be exposed to rainy weather.
